Youtube Star David Dobrik remembers the time his parents actually wanted him to quit the video platform.
Turns out, his family was not at all pleased with his YouTube career before his successful rise to fame.
His parents begged him to “quit”
In a recent interview with Elite Daily, the founder of the famous Vlog Squad remembered a time when his parents went to “beg” him to quit uploading YouTube videos.
“I think my family is just constantly confused [about] what’s going on. I remember the first couple years I started doing this they were kind of like ‘OK, what’s going on?’”
Further explaining how adamant his family used to be about the prospect of a career in the streaming service platform, he further said:
“At first, they were like, ‘You need to stop doing this and go back to school.’ They were a little bit scared it was a fluke.”
All in the past
Now that Dobrik found success and fame thanks to his YouTube videos, his parents are more supportive with his internet career.
“I think they’re a little more comfortable with it… They’re like ‘OK, maybe he can support himself.’ I think they’re happy.”
Just like any other parents, Dobrik’s mom and dad only worried about him finding a way to support himself independently. They seem to be unsure about his potential career path before his fame.
A career in YouTube wasn’t exactly society’s definition of success many years ago, but this has long since been proven wrong with stars raking in millions of dollars in a year.
Nowadays, Dobrik’s parents get excited when they see the 23-year-old YouTuber collaborate with other celebrities and influencers:
“They get really excited when I collaborate with people they’re familiar with. I always get a text from them like, ‘I can’t believe you just did a podcast with Anna Faris, I love her!’ So, they’re having fun.”
Although there were doubts during the early days of his career, his channel continued to grow with millions of views on every video.
David Dobrik is now considered as one of the faces of YouTube, further carving his name as one of the biggest stars on the platform today.
On the same boat
Dobrik’s parents aren’t the only people in his life that’s struggling to get used to his fame and recognition. In fact, Dobrik himself still can’t believe how far he’s come.
He still can’t wrap his mind around the success he’s accomplished so far, especially with his recent appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.
Apparently, sitting next to the late night host left Dobrik starstruck.
“That was definitely a moment where I was like, ‘This is nuts,’”
“[That show] was the one thing I watched with my family that we’d always have on. It would always feel so cool to sit there and watch it with them when I was younger, and they wouldn’t make me go to bed as long as I was watching [it]. So, that was my ticket to staying up. I watched it all the time, and it was so crazy being on the other side of it.”
As of writing, David Dobrik has over 16.7M subscribers on YouTube.
He previously uploads new videos thrice a week but due to the ongoing pandemic, he’s taking a break from his regular YouTube schedule and is now more focused on making TikTok content instead.
