Apex Legends to drop on Steam on Nov. 4, will launch on Switch next year

Save the date, Apex Legends players!

Respawn is gearing up to bring the popular BR shooter to Steam on November 4, alongside season seven. However, the title’s upcoming Switch port won’t launch sometime until 2021.

A little bit more of waiting will do Switch owners some good.

Official Steam drop

Apex Legends’ launch on Steam is complete with full cross-play support on consoles and Origin.

This decision is driven to maximize EA’s exposure and in-game revenues.

Respawn’s popular battle royale title, Apex Legends, will drop on Steam on November 4 as a free-to-play release. This is expected to massively expand the game’s current reach.

In gaming, Steam remains as the most dominant PC user ecosystem and is considered as the platform’s most important storefront.

Chad Grenier, Game Director on Apex Legends, penned the announcement in a blog post:

“For PC players, Apex Legends is officially coming to Steam when Season 7 launches on November 4, 2020. If you play on Steam and you’re new to Apex Legends, we can’t wait to welcome you aboard. And if you’ve previously been playing on Origin, feel free to give it a spin on Steam—all your account progression and unlocks will carry over between the two platforms.”

Many fans have been anticipating Apex‘s move to Steam since EA and Valve announced a partnership back in October 2019.

Respawn was tight-lipped regarding specific details, giving only vague clues such as “next year” and “this fall.”

Finally, the studio confirmed an official release date.

To celebrate EA and Valve’s partnership, Steam players will also get their hands on three limited-time gun charms inspired by the Portal and Half-Life franchises, mix together with Apex elements— this includes Octane with a headcrab, Wattson with a Companion Cube, and a potato GLaDOS.

Delayed into 2021

However, Grenier also confirmed that the Switch port of Apex Legends has been pushed back into 2021.

“For those who game on the Nintendo Switch, we’re still hard at work on the port, but in order to do justice to the game and make it into the great experience Switch players deserve, our team needs more time. This year has brought on unexpected new challenges, to put it mildly, and we don’t want to rush anything out.”

“Switch owners can expect to get their hands on Apex Legends next year. And of course, when Apex Legends does launch on Switch, it’ll come with support for cross-platform play, our latest seasonal content, and full feature parity with the other versions of the game.”

No exact timeline or ETA was specified, but rest assured— the Switch version will retain all the well-loved content, features, and cross-play capabilities on the title’s console and PC versions.

The studio only recently turned on cross-play between console and PC play, but there are some stipulations and rules in place of course.

Cross-saves are also being implemented, which is only to be expected since most of the progress and data are stored in the cloud.

As of writing, Apex Legends can be played on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Origin for PC.
